What is a Human Growth Hormone – HGH?

HGH and health

HGH (somatotropin) is a protein hormone produced by cells called somatotrophs located at anterior pituitary gland – a major endocrine organ in the brain. HGH regulates growth and regeneration in the human body. HGH is released in pulses every 2-5hours and levels are highly affected by genetics, age, nutrition, activity and sleep. This hormone is responsible for growth spurts during puberty when its levels reach 20X the normal adult levels. It is also responsible for degeneration and aging when HGH levels begin to decline from the age of 30 and become almost none existent by the age of 50. Because HGH affects cell regeneration it is a master regulator of many functions in the body. HGH was first synthesized in 1982 using recombinant DNA technology and used in medicine for HGH replacement therapies since. Synthetic version of HGH is referred to as rHGH. Low levels of HGH in adults called Adult Growth Hormone Deficiency – AGHD. It can be caused by age, poor nutrition, injury, surgery, food toxins, lack of sleep and exercise.

AGHD symptoms:

  • Increased waistline body fat.
  • Decreased sexual interest.
  • Low strength and stamina.
  • Decrease in muscle mass
  • Skin loses tone and wrinkles.
  • Hair loss and grey hair.
  • Poor wound healing and weak immunity.
  • Problems with memory.
  • Loss of flexibility.
  • Fatigue.
  • Poor general well-being.
  • Bone fractures.
  • Poor cholesterol.
  • Anxiety and depression.
  • Loss of motivation.

HGH and Anti-Aging

HGH now is commonly prescribed for people having AGHD to maintain fitness, youthfulness and productivity at any age. Lack of HGH can be also managed by regular exercise, special nutrition, rest and supplements. Even though, healthy habits can significantly delay aging, its effects are limited. Therefore, HGH therapy is increasingly popular method to slow down aging. HGH is also experimentally used to treat dementia, multiple sclerosis and other brain degenerating diseases. Some celebrities employ HGH therapy as an effective way of staying young and it is commonly referred to as a “secret elixir of youth”

HGH use in sports

HGH is also commonly used in sports to cope with high performance demands and to gain edge over the competitors, such as muscle size, strength and speed, injury recovery, stamina, low body fat. HGH increases regeneration of muscle, tendons and cartilage among many other tissues. HGH has a capacity to not only regenerate muscle tissue, but can also stimulate satellite cells (muscle stem cells) to increase a number of muscle cells or more accurately number of nucleus in the muscle fibers. This contributes to permanent size and strength growth capacity of muscles. For this reason it is preferred to anabolic steroids as latter has a temporary increase in muscle performance, harsh side effects and does nothing to increase performance capacity. It is also sometimes added to maximize performance and reduce side effects, such as loss of hair, libido, unwanted fat gain or acne.

Benefits of HGH in sports:

  • Muscle mass.
  • Extreme fat loss.
  • Strength and speed.
  • Flexibility.
  • Reduced injury occurrence.
  • Motivation.
  • Confidence.
  • Focus.
  • Feelings of well being.
  • Skin tone.
  • Sex drive.
